SAVAGE SICILY TREKKING OVER ACTIVE VOLCANOES (8 days/7 nights)
Day 1: Catania - Taormina
Arrival at Catania Airport and transfer by public bus to Taormina (1 hour -
bus to Taormina every hour). Check in at the hotel** and free time in
Taormina. This is a wonderful medieval town situated at the top of a
rock sheer to the sea. This special position offers different landscapes,
such as Giardini Naxos bay with its crystal-clear sea and the volcano
Etna. Crossroads of many cultures – Greek, Arab, Norman, Bourbons –
Taormina, as the whole Sicily, preserve this harmonic blend of cultures.
Dinner in one of the many local restaurants and pizzeria . Overnight
stay in hotel** with breakfast included.
Day 2: Lipari
In the morning private transfer
from Taormina to Milazzo harbour. Hydrofoil from Milazzo to Lipari,
the main of the Aeolian Islands. Free time to enjoy the beautiful sea
and Lipari most beautiful beaches such as Canneto, Spiaggia
della Papesca and Spiaggia Valle Muria. Also, worth of being
visited is the Archeological Museum. As an alternative, trekking (3
hours, +350 mt) can be done from the harbour.
Dinner in some of the local restaurants
where fish is served, pizzeria or typical trattoria. Overnight stay
in hotel** with breakfast included.
Day 3: Vulcano
In the morning hydrofoil to Vulcano, one of the seven Aeolian Islands, famous
for its black beaches and Thermal Springs. Excursion to Vulcano’s
crater to see the Fumarole. Enchanting view of the whole archipelago.
In the afternoon time for going to the beach and to the Thermal Springs. In
the late afternoon hydrofoil back to Lipari (hydrofoil Lipari-Vulcano
20 min). Overnight stay at the same hotel with breakfast included.
In the morning hydrofoil to Salina (the green island). From the harbour
public bus to Val di Chiesa and from there excursion to Santa Marina
Salina through “Mt Fossa delle Felci” (mt 960) through birch and pine
woods. From Santa Marina harbour hydrofoil back to Lipari and overnight
stay at the same hotel with breakfast included.
In the morning leaving from Lipari to Stromboli. Check in at the hotel**.
Free time to enjoy Stromboli unique black beach and go shopping. In
the afternoon leaving from the hotel for the excursion to the active
volcano* with certified guides. Overnight stay in hotel** with breakfast
included.
Stromboli trekking: +400 mt, about 4 hours
*) The volcano is 924 mt high and when it is not erupting people are allowed
to climb up the top. At the moment it is possible to reach only 400
mt escorted by a certified volcanic guide, according to the Italian
law, because the volcano is erupting. At 400 mt there is a platform
where people can sit and look at the explosions (generally every half
an hour). In this case the effective walking lasts about 3 hours. It
is not known yet if the crater will be opened up to the top for the
next season. It depends on safety measures that are constantly monitored.
The effective walking up 924 mt is about 6 hours. Quite hard and for
trained people.
Day 6 : Catania
In late morning hydrofoil from Stromboli to Milazzo. Private transfer
from Milazzo harbour to Catania. Check in at the hotel** in the city
centre (very close to the Duomo). Catania shows many baroque churches
and buildings, all placed in the very heart of the city centre.
Moreover there is a huge variety of pubs, restaurants, pizzerias and
trattoria to be chosen for dinner and nightlife. Overnight stay in hotel
with breakfast included.
Day 7: Etna
At 08h30 am transfer by public bus from Catania railway station (about 20 minutes
on foot from the hotel) to Rifugio Sapienza (1800 mt) on the
southern side of Mt Etna. Trekking to the craters of the 2001 eruption
(at mt 2000) and Mt Silvestri. In the afternoon (at 04h30 pm) transfer
by public bus from Rifugio Sapienza to Catania city centre.
Dinner in Catania city centre and overnight stay in hotel** with breakfast
included.
Option: As an alternative, possibility to proceed up to 2900 m to visit
the last eruption’s craters accompanied by a mountain escort with a
4WD Vehicle (trip by jeep and guide to be paid at Rifugio Sapienza
– euro 38,00).
Giorno 8: Catania
Free morning to enjoy the old fish market of the city centre. Transfer
by public bus from the city centre (bus stop near the Duomo) to Catania
airport and end of our services.
